aarch64: Optimized implementation of memmove for Qualcomm Falkor

  This is an optimized memmove implementation for the Qualcomm Falkor
processor core.  Due to the way the falkor memcpy needs to be written,
code cannot be easily shared between memmove and memcpy like in case
of other aarch64 memcpy implementations due to which this routine is
separate.  The underlying principle is the same as that of memcpy
where it tries to use registers with the same lower 4 bits for
fetching the same stream, thus optimizing hardware prefetcher
performance.

Performance:

The routine fares around 20-30% better than the generic memmove for
most medium to large sizes (i.e. > 128 bytes) for the new walking
memmove benchmark (memmove-walk) with an unexplained regression
between 1K and 2K.  The minor regression is something worth looking
into for us, but the remaining gains are significant enough that we
would like this included upstream as we looking into the cause for the
regression.  Here is a snippet of the numbers as generated from the
microbenchmark by the compare_strings script.  Comparisons are against
__memmove_generic:

i think adding a falkor specific memmove is ok,
can you expand on why is it difficult to share code
between memcpy and memmove?

The algorithms for memmove and memcpy are quite different, from the copy
loop sizes to prefetching behaviour because of the memmove requirement
to work on overlaps.  Using multiple registers in memmove to expand the
copy look to the memcpy size regresses performance for memmove while
reducing the copy loop size in memcpy regresses memcpy, so it doesn't
make sense to try and unify the implementations.

i'd expect memmove to do the same thing as memcpy
if there is no overlap or the overlap is dst < src.

why memcpy is not optimal for those cases?
i don't quite understand the prefetching and loop
size problems.

i think sharing code between memmove and memcpy is
useful for instruction cache and code maintenance too.
if that cannot be done for some reason then that
should be spelled out more clearly in the commit

It is, but I'd have to add an extra condition in there specifically for
that and jump to memcpy.  The current check only tells us if the src is
before the dest or after, so it is not a pure overlap check.

I have specified that in the code comment.  The hardware prefetcher on
the falkor is trained using the register numbers due to which memcpy
works best when only one register is used for copy.  Unrolling to copy
64 bytes in a loop works very well, much like the generic memcpy.

For memmove though, it cannot use the same algorithm since it needs to
prefetch ahead to avoid overwriting overlapping locations, due to which
it can only copy 32 bytes at a time using two registers that can alias
to the same hardware prefetcher, thus training it effectively.

I agree that sharing code would have been nice (I tried that, and I'll
continue looking for a way to unify it if possible in future), but there
is a non-trivial difference in performance between memcpy and memmove
and I can't justify giving up that performance.  If the above
explanation is clear enough for you, I'll put that into the commit message.

normally it is safe to call memcpy from memmove if
dst <= src, i think for the falkor memcpy it is only
safe if dst+64 <= src because of the way the last
64 bytes and unaligned cases may reread previous
bytes that are already written in case of an overlap (?)

i think this should be documented somewhere
(memmove commit message or memcpy source)

can you see if an extra dst+64<=src check may allow
sharing memmove and memcpy code?

ok, i still not fully understand the issue but
this makes it clearer.

do you think there is still a prefetch issue if
dst+64 <= src ?

this explanation is good enough, but i'd like to hear
if doing memcpy if dst+64 <= src may help or not.

Yes, I have been exploring on similar lines and it actually improves
performance by a bit, but it doesn't completely eliminate the need for
memmove yet which is why I'm still holding out on it.  I will continue
to work on trying to unify the two as much as possible.  I'll make that
explicit in my commit message too.
