I looked into trying to do something special for gdbarch_iterate_over_objfiles_in_search_order, but I couldn't come up with anything I was happy with. This gdbarch method could, theoretically, iterate over objfiles in any particular order based on what the current objfile is, and plugging the symbol cache into that would be awkward. The solution presented here is not that bad though. For global symbol lookups it records the objfile that was current at the time of the lookup, and a later hit requires the same objfile. This means a symbol may be recorded multiple times in the cache, but a larger cache will ameliorate any performance loss from the duplication. One can imagine making the size of the cache dependent on the size of the program, or have it dynamically adapt, but that's more code and I have no data to guide such a decision. For the nonce there is a maint command to adjust the size. This will allow experimentation to at least pick a possibly better default size. I need to enhance the perf testsuite to allow demonstrating how much the cache helps. All the other perf patches make the cache less and less useful, but I think(!) in the end we'll still want it, I see programs a lot larger than most. I think of the cache as simple proxy for a symbol table that spans all objfiles. 2014-12-19 Doug Evans Add symbol lookup cache. * NEWS: Document new options and commands. * symtab.c (symbol_cache_key): New static global.
