For both j0f and y0f, the largest error for all binary32 inputs is now less
then 9.5 ulps with respect to the infinite precision result, i.e., less than
9 ulps after rounding, which is the largest error allowed. (This is for
rounding to nearest; for other rounding modes, the new code should not behave
worse than the old one.)

The new code is enabled only when there is a cancellation at the very end of
the j0f/y0f computation, or for very large inputs, thus should not give any
visible slowdown on average. Two different algorithms are used:

* around the first 64 zeros of j0/y0, approximation polynomials of degree 3
are used, computed using the Sollya tool (https://www.sollya.org/)

* for large inputs, an asymptotic formula from [1] is used

[1] Fast and Accurate Bessel Function Computation,
John Harrison, Proceedings of Arith 19, 2009.

The largest error is now obtained for the following inputs respectively:

libm wrong by up to 9.50e+00 ulp(s) for x=0x1.8bde7ep+5
j0f gives 0x1.e97c1ep-14
mpfr_j0 gives 0x1.e97c0cp-14

libm wrong by up to 9.49e+00 ulp(s) for x=0x1.3d4e56p+6
y0f gives 0x1.b42876p-16
mpfr_y0 gives 0x1.b42864p-16

Paul, besides mixed indentation and other style issues (which should
be easier to fix, I can help you out with this), I am seeing these failures

these failures are due to the inputs that now give the largest error in
binary32, rounding to nearest, because I've added those inputs to
math/auto-libm-test-in.

For math/test-float-j0 and math/test-float-y0, it appears those inputs
give an error larger than 9 ulps for some directed rounding modes.

For other failures, it appears those inputs, when converted to other
formats, also give errors larger than 9 ulps.

Should I remove those inputs from auto-libm-test-in?

Best regards,
Paul

So if I understand correctly, you patch increase the ulps for non-default
rounding for this specific inputs? If it were the case, could be fix it
as well?

I am not sure how to proceed in such case, Joseph could give us a better
idea.

The 9ulp limit applies to all rounding modes; implementations that don't
go over that limit in any rounding mode are certainly best. (In some
cases SET_RESTORE_ROUNDF (FE_TONEAREST) (for float; different macro names
for different types) can be used as a cheap way to reduce errors in other
rounding modes, but then in general you need to take care about
recomputing some overflowing / underflowing results in the original
rounding mode.)

It's a good idea to test any patch adding inputs to auto-libm-test-in for
all floating-point formats supported by glibc, to make sure large errors
aren't introduced for other formats. That means testing on at least two
architectures (because ldbl-128ibm is only supported on powerpc, and
ldbl-96 is only supported on x86_64/i386/ia64). In all cases, the patch
as submitted needs to be tested on at least one architecture to make sure
it does not introduce any test failures there (and in particular, that
there are no too-large ulps on that architecture after the patch for any
non-XFAILed input in auto-libm-test-in).

If you don't want to fix all implementations at once for a given input in
auto-libm-test-in, you can use xfail:<format> or xfail-rounding:<format>,
e.g. xfail:binary128. Such an XFAIL, for cases where errors are too large
for some formats, should have a comment referencing an open bug for that
issue of large errors (for Bessel functions, such bugs are already open in
Bugzilla, since we can consider the open bugs to cover all affected
formats).

I guess the previous code already had an error > 9 ulps on this specific
input:

However on my machine I have an error of only 9 ulps for that input.
Maybe your machine doesn't have fma? Maybe I should develop my code
on a machine without fma, assuming the errors will be smaller with fma.

My machine is not really the issue, although it does support FMA3 (it is
i7-4790K haswell). The issue is we need to handle the all possible
compiler options used, which is my case it is the default for the x86_64
compiler produces with build-many-glibcs.py.

Using -march=native, the maximum error does improve although it is still
large in some cases (below).

For the FMA issue, newer implementation handles it by checking __FP_FAST_FMA
and using __builtin_fma{f,l}. Check the double e_log2.c implementaion
(3e08ff544b86834cd).
